REFLECTION: PE REG SMITH

Thank you President Elect Reg Smith for last week's Reflection.

DR CAROL BROWN - PAUL HARRIS FELLOW

It was a treat to honour a fellow Rotarian from the United States when Past President Kevin Sheehan named Dr Carol Bond a Paul Harris Fellow at last week's meeting. This is the beauty of Zoom that we can join with people around the world in the one place and celebrate Rotary fellowship.

PRIZE WINNER

Winners are Grinners!  First Prize for the Mask Competition at last week's meeting, was won by PP Phil Endersbee.  A "meat tray"!  Thanks to Adrian Nelson for his sense of humour and activation of this special photograph competition that would not have happened without ... COVID-19!

SPECIAL MENTIONS FOR MASK CREATIONS

The Photographic Mask Competition was fiercely contested by most of our Members at last week's meeting.  Thank goodness we were not all in the same space at Sofitel, as the competition was truly "untamed"! Judge Adrian looks composed in the safety of his home but it would have been a different story if judging at the Sofitel!

DID YOU KNOW ...?

David York Syme was a Charter Member of Rotary Melbourne and held the classification for Shipping? His father founded the Melbourne Steamship Company of which David became General Manager in 1918.  He was a key person in the Australian shipping industry, a member of the Commonwealth Shipping Board, and the Australian Delegate to the International Conference of Shipowners.  In the shipping strike of 1920, Prime Minister Hughes summoned Syme to hasten the referral of the strike to a tribunal.  He was a Commissioner of the Melbourne Harbour Trust, a Director of the National Bank, the Mt. Lyell Mining & Railway Company and the Metropolitan Gas Company.  He was a brother-in-law of Burdett Laycock.

'WHERE ARE THE R100 SOCKS?'

KATIE WILFORD CLIMBING IN R100 SOCKS

Editor was rapt to receive an update from our loved former Global Scholar Katie Wilford who was such an exceptional scholar, traveller and friend to us in Rotary Melbourne.  Her R100 socks have been used again, this time climbing her first 4.3 km high mountain.

R 100 SOCKS KEEPING ROB FIT IN STAGE 3

Rob Nethercote was doing it tough during 'pandemicania' Stage 3!  Golfing and bowling!  R100 socks ensured his comfort and warmth as he toughed it out on the golf course!  Wonder what he will do in Stage 4 now?

CLIVE WEEKS REHABILITATION MESSAGE

Message from Clive:  "I was operated on first thing this morning (Friday, 31 July) and all went well - hopefully the recovery will also be fine. Should be home Tuesday - Perhaps I will be a good boy and do as I am told to help this happen!!!  Regards Clive.  We all wish you a speedy recovery Clive.  No wonder you required surgery after kicking the door down in  Alcatraz last year, hopefully you will do as your told in lockdown at home.

BEHIND THE MASK

Thank you President Marion for providing this fascinating information from National Gallery of Victoria's Director, Tony Ellwood exploring the wearing of masks over the centuries.

RICHARD WHEN HE ISN'T A DENTIST

This photo of Richard and Ari Skinner conveys what a dentist does when in lockdown!  Here he is proudly displaying what he has industriously created recently. Ari thinks it is a vice!  Is that a "device" or a "vice" Ari?   Seems he has been learning fitting and turning. Hope that isn't part of his dentristry skills now!
