The Around the Bay bike ride was certainly a challenge for the riders with extremely strong and gusty winds. A consequence of the conditions was the cancellation of the 50km route over the Westgate Bridge to Altona. These riders were diverted down the Bay to Mordialloc and return that meant about 15 Rotary Route Marshals were not required on the day.
However, this year we also took up 12 SAG wagon roles and 12 rest area roles at Sorrento and Dromana. There were many more calls for assistance than normal and riders exiting the ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento had a decided shade of sea green on their faces as well as sand in their ears!
The spirit of the riders and support staff was fabulous and Rotary will be passing on funds raised to the children from disadvantaged families who are recipients of the Learning for Life program of The Smith Family. This event remains one of the highlights of the Rotary year.
