Alberto said: "When I last spoke at this forum in 2011 the theme of my speech was that the mining boom would not last forever, and we needed to invest the windfalls to benefit the broader community and for future generations.
You don’t need to be an economist to know that you’re generally on safe ground with a prediction that what goes up must come down, but I did not realise at the time how soon that prediction would be realised. History shows the boom peaked in 2012 and I think it also records we did not make all that we could have from the windfall it bestowed.
Some seven years later, under very different conditions, I again want to discuss the economy,
and what we must now do to ensure the continued prosperity of our nation."
