MEET A NEW MEMBER – SURESH MARCANDAN
Suresh Marcandan was inducted on the 15th May 2019 with the classification Management Consulting – General.
Suresh was born in Sri Lanka where he had his primary education, before moving to the United Kingdom to continue his studies.
He is an alumnus of the world reputed College of Maritime Studies in Southampton from where he graduated as a Master Mariner, before serving, for many years, as a Master (Captain) aboard large container vessels and bulk carriers owned by the famous Danish shipping line – Maersk Line.
He later progressed to take on senior management positions, including that of CEO within leading international ship owning companies in Singapore and Malaysia. During this time, he was hand-picked to represent the Government of Singapore, as a Consultant in Vocational Education, at the UN agency – International Maritime Organisation in London.
Suresh’s entrepreneurial calling led him to migrate to Australia where he founded People Power International - a Brisbane-based, boutique management consulting practice specialising in corporate strategy, change management, leadership development and strategic marketing. He subsequently transferred this practice to Malaysia, Indonesia, The Philippines and Sri Lanka, where he lived for the past 20 years.
In addition he also founded a few other SMEs, namely – Stella Maris Marine Services Ltd. (Marine Consulting), Sugirtham Holdings Ltd (Global Investments), Serendib Eco-Projects Ltd (Project Financing & Management), People Potential International (Executive Search) and Villa Vinayaga Ubud.
Suresh has been an active Rotarian in 8 Rotary Clubs since 1989, and served as Community Service Director, International Service Director, New Generations Director, Club Service Director and Secretary. He was awarded the ‘Four Avenues of Service’ citation by Rotary International and also Best Secretary (Large Club Category) award by The District Governor of District 3300 for his great humanitarian services during the South Asian Tsunami in December 2004.
In recent years, Suresh has pursued his passion of using the power of education as a great social leveller, particularly in less developed nations. He sees his purpose in life as leveraging on the power of education to alleviate poverty and develop less privileged societies to achieve greater emancipation and empowerment.
Suresh holds a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA - UK), Master of Business Administration (MBA - UK), Master of Laws (LLM – UK), Post-Graduate Diploma in Marketing (UK) and Graduate Certificate in Education (Australia). He also holds post-graduate qualifications in International Diplomacy & World Affairs. He is an alumnus of Oxford University (Said Business School), Harvard Kennedy School of Government, Harvard Business School and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy.
Suresh returned to live in Australia in March 2019, and chose Melbourne as his home.
