17th IFTR World Tennis Championships

The 17th ITFR World Championships were held at Melbourne Park over 4 days immediately prior to the Rotary International Convention.
Rotary Melbourne were the organisers for the event, with Brenton Whittenbury from RC Adelaide as tournament director.

32 players from 7 countries participated in 8 age-classified events - Mens singles and doubles, ladies singles and doubles and mixed doubles. Our club was represented by Stephen Rando (who played with Brenton Whittenbury), Peter Rogers and Phillip Endersbee, John Shaw (who also played singles) and Garry Fowler, Steve DeBono and Nick Batrouney, Andrew Durakovich and Chad Brentish. Unfortunately, none of our teams made the finals, and the only Australian winner was Amanda Whittenbury.

The event was sponsored by the ever generous Wildernesswear, in the form of specially enscribed tennis socks and the T-shirts, and Wilson.

The opening event was a cocktail cruise on the Yarra, which was opened by DG Amanda, who welcomed all to Melbourne, and President Adrian was there on the opening day to cheer on our players. The closing Gala Dinner was held at the Lyceum Club, where Garry, on behalf of the Club, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation and Brazil team soccer jumper emblazoned RCMelbourne 23. ITFR President Marcos Franco made the presentation in Portuguese, ably translated by Phillip Endersbee!

Net proceeds of the event are donated by our Club to End Polio Now, and it is estimated the amount raised will be around $3000.
