You can make a Difference
SecondBite redistributes surplus fresh food to community food programs around Australia. Food is donated by farmers, wholesalers, markets, supermarkets, caterers and events. This high-quality surplus food is redistributed to community food programs that support people who are homeless, women and families in crisis, youth at risk, indigenous communities, asylum seekers and new arrivals.
The RCM has supported SecondBite for over 10 years through members volunteering to collect food from Queen Victoria Market and Prahran Market. SecondBite supply the van and a driver and our members use a purpose designed cart to collect the food. This involves collecting from the various stall holders and in the case of Prahran, sorting according to variety and quality before putting it in the van for return to Kensington. The commitment is on a Sunday at both markets for about 2 Hours, every 6 weeks or so at Prahran and once per 2 months at Victoria market. It is a lot of fun and you can make a difference.
Bob Glindemann is looking for new volunteers and he can be contacted at the Club office
