Led by the Oceania Centenary Clubs (Rotary Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland and Wellington), Rotary members from 21 districts, in partnership with UNICEF, worked with local governments to develop and implement immunization programs to protect 100,000 children from rotavirus, pneumococcal disease, and cervical cancer across nine South Pacific Island countries, including Kiribati and Fiji. The Give Every Child a Future project is committed to strengthening the immunization programs in each country so that these vaccines continue to be delivered to future generations of children.
Rotary Melbourne Highlights from 2022-23 with President Adrian Nelson, Rotary International President Jennifer Jones. The year's theme was "Imagine Rotary".
The City of Melbourne dedicated their community flower bed to Rotary Melbourne for 5 months in 2023, to coincide with the Rotary International Convention held in Melbourne.
65 plus volunteers gathered at University of Melbourne to form a giant assembly line packing specially designed nutritious dry goods for sending to areas in need. Rotary Melbourne, Rotaract University of Melbourne and friends packed 12,600 meal packs in 1.5 hours for FORaMEAL. At 6 meals per pack that means 72,000 meals are now ready for delivery.
On 24th May 2023, we launched the four Peace Bells at the Rotary Melbourne Peace Park. In the week leading into the Rotary International Convention, we had visitors from across the world.
The bells were officially launched by bell designer Prof Neil McLachlan, Lord Mayor Sally Capp, Rotary Melbourne President Adrian Nelson, Project Leader Rob McGuirk, and Nobel Peace Laureate Tilman Ruff.
To celebrate Rotary Melbourne’s sister and friendship clubs during the Rotary International Convention, we held our Marvellous Melbourne Cocktail Party at the iconic Windsor Hotel.
The Rotary International Convention was held in Melbourne on 27-31 May 2023. With nearly 15,000 visitors from around the world, our club and members were involved in all aspects of the Convention, including the End Polio Walk, launch of our Peace Bells, welcoming Rotarians from around the world, our Marvellous Melbourne Cocktail Party at the Windsor, the Gala Spectacular at the Plaza Ballroom with RI President Jennifer Jones, the Rotarians Tennis Fellowship Tournament at Melbourne Park (home of the Australian Open), and much more.
Rotary Melbourne celebrated its 5000th club meeting on Wednesday 30th August 2023 by holding the 53rd annual Angus Mitchell Oration with special guest speaker, former Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard, with approximately 300 in attendance in the Grand Ballroom of the Sofitel on Collins, Melbourne.
100 Rotarians and guests attended our special expert panel at Porsche Brighton on the topice of Electric Vehicles "Myths Busted" on 15th November 2023. Our panellists included Heather Bone, Alex Coslovich, and Steve Amor.
This November, our Health & Ageing committee hosted 50 elderly residents from inner Melbourne at our annual Seniors Lunch at Max's Restaurant in Red Hill. Our club has been hosting this lunch for over 20 years via our Health & Ageing Committee and it is funded by our annual Footy Tipping Competition. The guests, many of whom live in public housing, loved being out in nature and with friends.
On Wednesday 21st February 2024, the 54th annual Angus Mitchell Oration was delivered by former Australian Ambassador to the USA, the Hon Arthur Sinodinos AO, with approximately 150 in attendance at the Sofitel on Collins, Melbourne.
Rotary Melbourne members and friends held their annual "On To Conference 2024" travelling between Melbourne and Bendigo for the Rotary District 9800 Conference. The trip ersonified Friendship, Fun, Food and Fact Finding.
On Wednesday 24th April 2024, the 8th annual Thomas Baker Oration was delivered by Dr Doug Hilton AO, CEO of the CSIRO on the topic of "If Science is to Save Us", with approximately 150 in attendance at the Sofitel on Collins, Melbourne.
The inaugural Artificial Intelligence Summit was held jointly by Rotary Melbourne and the Royal Society of Victoria on 29th May 2024 at the Society's beautiful 19th century building in Latrobe Street, featuring global thought leaders. Expert panellists included Finbar O'Hanlon, Assoc Prof Magdalena Simonis, Dr Dimitrios Salampasis and Aaron Sempf, with a few special guests beamed in from around the world.
The 2024 Monash Medal was presented to the Hon Josh Frydenberg for Leadership, Integrity and Service - Values of Sir John Monash and of Rotary at our luncheon meeting on 7th August at No 35, Sofitel on Collins. Our newest member, Yiannis Ventikos, Dean of Engineering at Monash University was also inducted.
The 2024 Annual Rotary Melbourne Grand Final Lunch was held on 24th September at No 35, Sofitel on Collins, with special guest speaker panellists Stephen McBurney, Head of AFL Umpiring, and sports barrister Adrian Anderson, Vice President of the Melbourne Cricket Club and former AFL General Manager of Football Operations.
Tangly Tan, a Cambodian scholar supported by Rotary Melbourne, shares an inspiring update about his recent achievements and experiences. From excelling in his university studies and undertaking a transformative trip to America to actively participating in cultural and community projects, Tangly reflects upon his dedication to learning, leadership, and making a meaningful impact.
