Christoph Schommer, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Luxemburg. He previously worked at IBM and studied Computer Science at the universities in Saarbrucken and Frankfurt/Main. Christoph has worked on numerous projects on Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Data Science and in various application domains such as in Humanities, Finance, and Medicine. Christoph teaches in Luxembourg, Berlin, Beijing, and Singapore. His team consists of 3 PostDocs, 5 Ph.D. candidates, and several Master and Bachelor students. He has been a Rotarian member of RC Gummersbach-Oberberg (Germany) since 2015. He is married and the proud father of one daughter. Christoph plays the piano and is interested in handball and chess.
Abstract
Obvious is a collective of researchers and artists who experiment with Deep Learning techniques (Artificial Neural systems) to explore the creative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Arts. In 2018, Obvious fed 15000 classical portraits into a Deep Learning system and let it learn to autonomously create a series of new portraits. One of these paintings was auctioned and sold at Christie's in New York for more than 400k USD - almost twice as much as other paintings by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol together. So, is art exclusively limited to human creativity, or is the AI's involvement also art? Against this background, this talk will serve as an inspiration and give food for thought, show possibilities of new application ideas, and give an overview of some of the ongoing activities in this field.
