September is Basic Education & Literacy Month

This month, Rotary shines a light on one of our core causes: supporting education and literacy around the world.

More than 775 million people worldwide over the age of 15 still cannot read or write. Rotary believes that literacy is not just about reading books – it’s about unlocking opportunity, breaking cycles of poverty, and empowering individuals to build better futures.

Through global projects and local initiatives, Rotary clubs:

  • Build schools and classrooms in communities that need them most.
  • Train teachers and provide resources so children can learn in safe, supportive environments.
  • Run literacy programs that give adults and children the skills to read, write, and thrive.
  • Support scholarships and mentorship to open doors for the next generation.

Closer to home, Rotary Melbourne has a proud tradition of promoting learning – from the Young Achiever & Cynthia Edgell awards, Cambodian Education for Disadvantage Children, and the annual fund raising for the Smith Family.

By investing in education, we are investing in peace, progress, and possibility. Together, Rotarians are helping to create a world where every child and adult has the chance to learn, grow, and succeed.
