Lively, energetic and focussed on bringing our City of Melbourne back to life! Our Lord Mayor Sally Capp motivated us at last week's meeting to be part of Council's plans to restart our Melbourne economy, life and soul. Last week's Reflection was an appropriate contribution to our Meeting online Remembrance Day 2020
Every year at 11 am on 11 November - the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month - we pause to remember those men and women who have died or suffered in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. This year marked the 75th Anniversary of the end of the Second World War. We were unable to mark this year's Remembrance Day by gathering together at the Shrine but thanks to Peter Davis and Major General Jim Barry, we were taken there at last week's meeting.
There is much activity and success for our newly created Fifth Focus of Rotary: Environment Sustainability. A small very efficient and focused team of Melbourne Rotarians are working hard to get our attention to supporting our environment. Gary Fowler pictured here, presented the project to our Members last week.
Three Rotarians harnessing positive energy to shape community, invite you to join them on a bold mission: To Create a Better World for All.
Date: Monday 16 November 2020
Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
A delightful Reflection was delivered by Ross Scholes-Robertson at our last meeting. Thank you Ross.

Last week's first of the Great Debates was a "bobby-dazzler"! The effort and behind-the-scenes preparation by the Debaters and the Rotary Melbourne team of organisers, did Rotary Melbourne proud! The Stilwell Family Trans Tasman Challenge Cup is waiting here to be engraved. Just a couple more Debates in the new year before engraving (we hope!). I have been assured alcoholic beverages were taken after the Debate!

Congratulations to Rosie Creswell our 2020 Sir John Reid Award recipient. Rosie was truly a delightful guest and Members respected and were touched by Rosie's sincerity and the wonderful life work she has contributed to community service. Bravo Rosie! Thanks to Cynthia Edgell and our Vocational Services Team and to Chris Stillwell for his emapthic, sensitive hosting of the Award to Rosie.

It was really lovely to see some of our previous Sir John Reid Awardees at last week's meeting. Libby Clarke (2020) and Kevin and Rhonda Butler (2019). Kevin (pictured) and Rhonda provided some fascinating details about BlazeAid and their recent successes. Sensational way some of our international backpackers, caught here in Australia during lockdown, working tirelessly around the bushfire areas with BlazeAid. Online we were honoured to have family of our esteemed Past President: Daughters, Jean Hadges & Margaret Ross: AND Grand-daughter and Chairman of the John T Reid Charitable Trusts, Belinda Lawson.
Another snapshot of Rotary Melbourne's 100 Years: Scott’s Hotel (pictured 1921) was the initial venue for luncheons, but, on 15 June 1921, a move was made to the supper room at the Melbourne Town Hall. This was more private than Scott’s Hotel where the meeting was disturbed by noise from the adjoining land. Catering at the supper room was done by the Mutual Store, courtesy of Rotarian Fred Ryall, the General Manager.
This month we celebrate and promote each week the activities of the Rotary International Foundation. Last week, Bob Fels explained the Rotary Foundation Global Scholarships – after which Bob will introduced our Guest Speaker and scholar Ida Whiteman.
Congratulations to all that participated: Here are the results of those that shared in the prize pool.
1st - Twilight Payment – Peter Dakin
2nd - Tiger Moth - Russell Board
3rd - Prince of Arran – Ted Garland
Last - Deb Yin Foo (Pictured and even happy with being Last)

Our Honorary Treasurer, Peter Hanlon provided us with an overview of Rotary Melbourne performance and financial position to 30 June, 2020. The Board of Rotary Melbourne as the Trustees of our 2 charitable funds approved the annual financial statements and related matters earlier this month. These accounts will be tabled for adoption by the members at the AGM on 18 November.
Terrific presentation from Tim Conolan who shared his Rotary journey so far and his involvement in the Happy as Larry Lunch. His video presentation from Tim's not for profit organisation: TLC for Kids Inc. can be viewed here: https://vimeo.com/274820448.
