2024 Monash Medal

The 2024 Monash Medal was presented to the Hon Josh Frydenberg for Leadership, Integrity and Service - Values of Sir John Monash and of Rotary at our luncheon meeting on 7th August at No 35, Sofitel on Collins. Our newest member, Yiannis Ventikos, Dean of Engineering at Monash University was also inducted.

About the Monash Medal

John Monash was one of our club’s founding members at the commencement of our club in 1921 and subsequently became Second president of this club for the year 1922/23.

Sir John’s contribution to Victoria, Australia and the world community is legendary. His counsel to all and especially to students was

“Adopt as your fundamental creed that you equip yourself for life not solely for your own benefit, but for the benefit of the whole community”.

He is a great Australian by any measure.

Our club has since 2010, awarded the Monash Medal to an outstanding Australian for the contribution of that person, to the Australian community and beyond. The criteria for the awarding of the medal are leadership, integrity and service – key Monash values and core values of Rotary.

The Hon Josh Frydenberg

In the August 2010 election Josh Frydenberg won the seat of Kooyong. He was only the fifth person to represent this seat in 88 years. A seat that was once held by Australia's longest-serving Prime minister, Robert Menzies.

He served under Prime Ministers Tony Abbott, Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison in the roles of:

  • Member for Kooyong: 21 August 2010 – 21 May 2022
  • Assistant Treasurer of Australia: 23 December 2014 – 21 September 2015
  • Minister of Resources and Energy: 21 September 2015 – 19 July 2016
  • Minister for the Environment and Energy: 19 July 2016 – 24 August 2018
  • Deputy Leader of the Liberal Parliamentary Party, and
  • Treasurer of Australia: 24 August 2018 – 23 May 2022

The 2024 Monash Medal is awarded to the Hon Josh Frydenberg:

For leadership, integrity and service to our nation as an elected representative to his community, and, subsequent service to three Prime Ministers in a variety of ministerial roles including his leadership as Treasurer in overseeing the Australian Government’s economic, and fiscal response to the coronavirus pandemic.
