Last Week's Meeting 23 April 2025

The meeting was called to order by MC Past President Adrian Nelson who paid respect to traditional owners and all present.  Dr Peter Hollingworth delivered the weekly reflection, a copy of which can be accessed in this bulletin.  President Catherine Baxter proposed the loyal toast, and on resumption after the meal break welcomed our Guest speaker and other visitors including Ashley Chandler the Club sponsored Rotary Global Scholar candidate being put forward as a nomination of District 9800.

President Catherine announced that long standing Rotary Melbourne member, Dr Peter Hollingworth celebrated his 90th Birthday recently, and in wishing him a happy birthday, President Catherine paid tribute to his lifetime of service.  Click [HERE] to read the transcript of the tribute.

President Catherine then reminded all of the busy ANZAC day long weekend, approaching in a few days, when on Sunday morning Rotary Melbourne members and guests will be manning a stall, serving as marshals and runners competing at this weekend’s Run the Tan for Mental Health.  On the day before there will be an opportunity to experience via augmented reality the new Notre Dame, at the Arts Committee organised fellowship event at the Immigration Museum.

President Catherine then called on Chair for the day, Stephen Rando, who introduced Dr. Munshya, highlighting his impressive journey from Zambia's Copper Belt to international diplomacy, and his academic achievements, as well as his dedication to advocacy in civil, refugee, and human rights law.

Dr. Munshya emphasized the importance of strengthening Zambia’s relationship with Australia and New Zealand. He mentioned Zambia’s commitment to alleviating poverty through collaboration with organizations like Rotary, and stressed Zambia's peaceful history and strategic position in Southern Africa, offering access to a regional market of over 500 million people.

He highlighted significant trade and investment opportunities in Zambia, including agriculture, tourism, mining, energy, and manufacturing.

Collaborative Efforts and Events he mentioned included

  • an inaugural Invest Zambia conference in July 2025, inviting Australian businesses to explore investment opportunities,
  • the Zambia Development Agency’s role in providing incentives for businesses and
  • the encouragement of Australian and Zambian businesses to join the Australia Zambia Business Council.

The Q&A at the conclusion of Dr Munshya’s address focussed on Zambia's stable legal system based on English common law and the ease of registering a company within a week and Zambia’s banking system with international standards and existing international banks.

The next questioned involvement of the African Diaspora, emphasising the importance of African associations in Australia and their role in connecting diasporas with their home countries.  He encouraged African immigrants to stay connected with their culture and contribute to their communities in Australia.

The third question focussed on Rotary’s efforts Against Malaria.  Dr Munshya noted significant progress in reducing malaria incidence, thanks to investments and efforts by local and international organizations, including Rotary.  He emphasised the need for continued support for eradication programs.  Details of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate Malaria can be viewed by clicking here

Dr. Munshya concluded with a call for mutual benefit through collaboration and investment and reiterated that Zambia is open for business and ready to welcome new partnerships to unlock global opportunities.
