Last Week's Meeting 10 December 25

MC – PP Bob Glindemann OAM

Reflection: PP Quin Scalzo AM delivered our traditional festive reflection composed by John Mitchell (deceased) a few days before his sudden death in 2016 – included later in this bulletin, John’s words are as relevant today as they were 9 years ago.

President Philip proposed the loyal toast and reminded us of the passing of Antony (Tony) Greenwood AM – tribute published in last week’s bulletin, along with honorary Member and distinguished Rotarian Bill Pratt AM.

President Philip welcomed our music performers for this event, Rotary Melbourne Music Scholarship Awardees, Sara Deeb and Tilly Jones.  Philip also welcomed District 9800 Governor Peter Shepheard, Smith Family Regional Programs Manager Tania Watson-Leishman and guests to be inducted this day - Dr Helen Durham and Nicholas Sutherland from Corporate Member RedR Australia, and Dr David Horgan accompanied by his wife Roswitha.

The three new members Helen Durham, Nicholas Sutherland, and David Horgan were formally inducted as members of Rotary Melbourne and each briefly responded.  David Horgan’s introductory article is included later in this bulletin.

Jim Orchard then took the stage to draw the 2025 Smith Family raffle, - $2,000 Voucher donated by My Ride, Collingwood. The winner was Bruce Davidson.

Following this Jim announced that the fundraising campaign this year for the Smith Family raised $20,000 made up for the bike raffle proceeds, pledges in support of Team Rotary Melbourne bike rides, and proceeds from fund raising at the 2025 Melbourne Marathon, and Around the Bay Bike Ride.

Rotary Melbourne Maestro and Chair of the Club’s Arts Committee, David Kram, was then Joined by music entrepreneur Karen Kim to lead the festive musical presentation.

After the collective present sang the Aussie Jingle Bells, David introduced Sara Deeb who played two delightful pieces by Debussy.

David Kram then explained the 8 candles in a Jewish Hanukkah menorah symbolizing the miracle of the oil in the Second Temple. Karen then introduced Tilly Jones who played her new composition, created on the laptop which was funded by her Rotary Melbourne music scholarship Award.

After further communal singing of Christmas carols, President Philip closed the meeting wishing all members and guests a wonderful festive season.
