Who says Rotary Melbourne doesn’t try to do things differently?
Some 20 members and guests met on Thursday for an evening ‘meeting’ at the Paris Cat Jazz Club in the city.
What a night it was! We were entertained superbly by the 9-piece Jack Pantazis Group who focused on the music of the legendary jazz guitarist and musical talent of the one and only Wes Montgomery. Wes was one of a large family, born 1923 in Indianapolis (nicknamed ‘Naptown’ apparently). His parents split early in his childhood so he had a tough upbringing. It was only in his 20s that he became a serious musician without formal training. He worked as a welder by day and musician by night to support his wife and family of seven children. Unfortunately he died of a heart attack in 1968 at the young age of 45, but left behind a legacy of diverse and classy music.
The band delivered a great performance, while we enjoyed splendid refreshments and excellent company.
Thanks to Robert Fiisher.
