Last Week's Meeting 27 May 26

Past President Philip Endersbee, MC for the day opened the meeting and called on Past President Adrian Nelson to deliver the reflection on behalf of Ruth Carlos Martinez, who was unwell. The transcript of this reflection is included elsewhere in this bulletin.

A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the 2026 Cynthia Edgell Empowerment Opportunity Gift Awards, introduced by Past President Kevin Sheehan. Kevin recalled Cynthia Edgel as a distinguished Rotary Melbourne member of more than 15 years, a certified life coach, mentor and passionate supporter of young women. Her generous bequest enabled Rotary Melbourne’s Community Welfare Committee to establish the annual award in her memory.

This year’s four awardees were nominated through Western Chances, Vincent Care and the Brotherhood of St Laurence. The recipients demonstrated strong motivation for personal growth, clear alignment with the program’s aims, and a practical need for financial assistance. Their ambitions included commerce studies at the University of Melbourne, CPA accreditation, nursing qualifications, and re-establishing a teaching career in Australia. Three recipients were present to receive their awards and spoke with warmth and gratitude. Their words powerfully conveyed how timely, practical support can help remove barriers to study, employment, independence and contribution. One particularly joyful moment came with the announcement that one awardee had gained Australian citizenship the previous week.

Opportunity, Resilience and National Food Security: Guest speaker Emma Germano, Director of the Melbourne Market Authority and Queen Victoria Market, then addressed the club on “Australia at the Crossroads: Food Supply Chains and National Resilience.” A farmer, former President of the Victorian Farmers Federation, and granddaughter of Italian migrants, Emma brought a deeply personal and practical perspective to food security.

She reminded members that food is not simply about calories: it is bound up with culture, identity, family and community. COVID exposed how quickly confidence in food availability can be shaken, even when the food itself exists on farms. More recently, concerns about diesel supply highlighted the fragility of the logistics that move food from paddock to plate.

Emma explained the often-invisible role of wholesale markets in maintaining diversity, competition and resilience in fresh food supply. While supermarkets dominate much of the market, central markets give growers alternative pathways and help sustain independent retailers. She also warned that abundance does not automatically equal resilience. Australia may produce significant food exports, but vulnerabilities in fuel, fertiliser, transport and public policy can still place the system under pressure.

Her central message was a call for better long-term national planning and public leadership. Australia is fortunate, she said, but must not take that fortune for granted. Citizens, businesses and governments are all part of the food system, and resilience requires more than hoping the next disruption will pass.

It was a thoughtful, energetic and challenging address — and a fitting reminder that Rotary conversations can help turn community concern into practical leadership.
