VIRGINIA LOVETT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY

As the first such company in the country, the MTC played a vital role in driving the spread of live theatre across Australia. Today with some 23000 subscribers and almost a quarter of a million show tickets annually, it is a major part in Melbourne’s theatrical offering.

Its Southbank Theatre complex, Sturt Street head office and theatrical workshop ensures an ongoing role in Melbourne’s emerging Arts Precinct especially when combined with the $200m investment by its shareholder, Melbourne University, in the new Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and the relocation of its Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.

Virginia talked about how watching the play ‘Angels in America’ back in the late 80s at the MTC’s old home in Russell Street had been a major influence on her choice of career that has seen her become one of Australia’s most respected arts administrators.

Prior to the MTC she ran Melbourne’s International Comedy Festival for 5 years, plus worked extensively in Sydney at the Powerhouse, the STC, and the Art Gallery of NSW. She is a Board member of the Committee for Melbourne.
