AUSSIE CENTENARY PEACE WALK WEEKEND

His Excellency the Governor General of Australia David Hurley launching the weekend’s activities

Rotary Melbourne was represented at the Rotary Centenary Peace Weekend in Canberra by PE Reg Smith and Sue, PP Robert Fisher and Myra, Claire Fraser and Mark Pinoli. A team from Rotary Sydney also participated in the festivities, and a senior diplomat from the New Zealand Embassy was at the opening ceremony for Rotarians and others who were unable to travel from NZ for the occasion.

There were three principal events:

  • Opening ceremony on Friday afternoon at the Rotary Peace Bell overlooking Lake Burley Griffin featuring His Excellency the Governor General of Australia David Hurley and Rotary International PP Ian Riseley
  • Rotary Centenary Peace Dinner on Friday at the National Museum of Australia with a keynote address by Hon Dr Brendon Nelson, Director of the Australian War Museum
  • A range of Aussie Peace Walks on Saturday and Sunday – 7km, 12km, 21km and 42km (the Rotary Melbourne team unsurprisingly chose the 7km option!) – involving some 450 entrants.

The activities were organised by Chris Edwards of the Rotary Club of Hall, and proceeds – expected to exceed $10,000 – have been earmarked for the Pacific immunisation project ‘Rotary Give Every Child a Future’.
