Reflection by Rt Rev the Hon Dr Peter Hollingworth 22 September

The psalmist once asked the question of the Creator “what are we that you are mindful of us?” and the answer came back “you have been fearfully and wonderfully made…and you stand a little lower than the angels.”

Fear and wonder represent the negative and positive elements of the human condition and both are needed for our safety and wellbeing and today we can see this with the COVID pandemic.  It is wonderful to acknowledge how effectively the new vaccines have been created and delivered around our world, and to praise the work on the frontline of human care for those suffering from the virus.  Fear on the other hand is now beginning to work in getting more people vaccinated while stopping too many through lack of knowledge and trust.

There is also a problem with the misuse of freedom .  The refusal to be vaccinated in the name of “my right to freedom” completely ignores mutual obligation which if lightly disregarded would make it difficult for a society to survive.  Freedom does not mean free rides at the expense of everyone else.

For good Rotary values, food, fellowship and the privilege of serving others we give thanks.  Amen.
