University of Melbourne Laureate Professor Peter Doherty shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 with Swiss colleague Rolf Zinkernagel, for their discovery of how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells.
Peter was Australian of the Year in 1997, and has since been commuting between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Melbourne.
He has been involved in research on infection and immunity for 50 years and is the patron and namesake of Melbourne’s Doherty Institute which was the first outside of China to isolate the COVID-19 virus.
Peter was given a Vocational Service Award in 2003/4 and elected as an Honorary Member 18/08/2004 - President Bob Glindemann
