Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, something of which many of us here should take particular note. Did you know that elder abuse is part of our dynamic Safe Families program in Rotary Melbourne, supported by more than 100 Rotary Clubs, Districts and other organisations?
Elder abuse is the mistreatment of an older person by someone with whom they have a relationship of trust. It may consist of physical, social, financial, psychological or sexual behaviour, or quite simply neglect.
Sometimes family, friends and carers may not know that their actions amount to elder abuse. Just as serious is being a silent bystander.
Rotary Safe Families have developed a three step approach to help us act appropriately:
1. Recognise the signs, behaviours and culture that drive abuse.
2. Raise your concerns safely with the possible victim.
3. Refer for support to 1800RESPECT or another suitable agency.
There’s an excellent Rotary YouTube on the subject, and I would like to acknowledge the wonderful support that The Baker Foundation provided in the making of the film.
For friendships in Rotary, and the opportunity to serve, we give thanks.
