Peter Berg was inducted on 26 March 2017 with the classification Financial Services – Banking – Treasury and his sponsor was Garry Fowler.
Born in Melbourne in 1946 and educated at Nunawading High School, Applecross High School (WA) and the University of Western Australia, completing a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He then moved to Melbourne where worked in the Economics Department with the National Bank of Australia. In 1969, Peter relocated to Sydney where he joined CSR Chemicals in the Market Research Department before going to the UK and Europe on an overseas working holiday.
Returning to Melbourne in 1973, Peter joined the fledgling money market/merchant banking industry before joining the First National Bank of Boston in 1981. He became the Head of Asia Pacific Treasury shortly thereafter and in 1984 was appointed Managing Director, European Treasury for the Bank.
In 1990 Peter joined ANZ working in senior treasury, capital, liability management and audit roles in both Melbourne and London. Peter worked with Westpac as a Financial Planner through to 2006 and then assumed other roles within the Financial Planning department until his retirement in December 2013.
Peter is a member of the Rotary Melbourne Arts, and Investment Committees, and is Club Ambassador for the Rotary Safe Families Project.
In 2020 Peter was one of the prime movers in establishing and co-chairing Rotary Melbourne’s Environment Sustainability Committee in response to Rotary International’s designating Environmental Sustainability as the 7th Area of Rotary Focus.
Since its creation, the Committee has provided leadership across the Club in making sure its activities take proper account of their environmental impact. The Committee has done this proactively by engaging in Rotary Park, supporting pollination and Bee Keeping, launching the Rotary Melbourne Environmental Sustainability Award, which has now been award for its second year, as well as initiating the annual World Environment day luncheon.
Of particular note has been Peter’s work on creating the Club’s Annual Environment Sustainability Award. Peter’s work in researching and finding outstanding candidates and managing the selection process has epitomised service above self.
For his sustained service to the Club, and his demonstration of Service Above Self as co-Chair of the Environment Sustainability Committee, and his hands on work creating and delivering the Environment Sustainability Award, Rotary Melbourne Awards Peter Berg this Paul Harris Fellow.
