A little about Sue....
Sue McCarthy joined the Rotary Club of Melbourne in May 1998 with the Classification of Banking-Administration. She was the General Manager Regulatory Affairs for the ANZ Bank. Sue was a trail blazer for senior women in banking having been the first woman appointed to an executive position in banking in Victoria and ending up one of the most senior women executives in Australian banking. From July 1996 to June 1998, Sue chaired the Board of the Australian Banking Industry Ombudsman and from 1998 to 2007 she served on the Reserve Bank of Australia Payment Systems Board. Sue’s banking and regulatory experience has been invaluable for the Club. She has been a long-standing member of the Investment Committee and more recently the Audit Committee. But then Sue has served the Club in many offices and on many committees including as Vice President and Director, Investment Committee, on the Rotary Foundation, RCM Foundation, Welfare of the Elderly, Club Groups, International Fellowship and Public Issues Committees. She was a foundation member of the SecondBite collection team and continues in that role. She has regularly participated in interview panels leading to the Club's outstanding record in successfully nominating Rotary Peace Fellows, Ambassadorial Scholars and the more recently Rotary Post Graduate Scholars.
Sue is great contributor and it doesn’t end with Rotary with extensive not for profit Board involvement.
Many here will know Sue for her quiet, unassuming but persistent approaches to commit to participating in the Every Rotarian Every Year scheme formally known as Rotary Centurions. Since 2006, as part of her involvement with the Rotary Foundation Committee, Sue has quietly managed this effort for the Club and it is significant. Sue has signed up, nurtured and reminded many, many members to contribute to the Rotary Foundation every year. Originally based on U$100 it is now more and many members contribute much more. It is better than a trailing commission, it is the full amount year after year and it is impossible to know the extent of contributions to the Rotary Foundation that Sue is directly responsible for. Sue, of course leads by example in contributing this way herself.
Sue is a regular attendee of Club Meetings and District Conferences and events. Her penchant for international travel sometimes gets in the way but her commitment is rock solid. She is respected for her forthright views about Rotary and the direction of the Club.
A little about Stephen....
Stephen Lake joined the Rotary Club of Melbourne in September 2000. More precisely he quietly and unassumingly slipped in and began work. He had previous experience of a large Rotary club having been a member of the Rotary Club of Auckland City Sunrise for nine years.
On joining the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Stephen immediately immersed himself in committee work and it would be impossible to list here all the committees he has served on and chaired. His work has been constant, energetic and over a diverse range of portfolios important to the ongoing success of the Club. Stephen has worked tirelessly in the area of Club membership and all those years ago bringing the Club online and up to date with IT and social media.
Stephen was part of the team that redeveloped the Club website integrating database content receiving District recognition for best website and served as our Club Director of Membership in 2004-2006. Stephen was selected as one of two Club representatives on the “District Extension Committee” for the ground-breaking establishment of the Rotary e-Club of Melbourne, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Melbourne, the first e-club in District 9800.
But it hasn’t all been membership and IT. In his first year with the Club Stephen was a member of the Community Welfare Committee and was instrumental in establishing the Town and Country Student Exchange. His involvement with this continued over the next three years. In 2004/5 Stephen was part of the Club Administration Review Project. He has served on the Club President Nominating Committee. He has been a Shell Livewire mentor. He is an enthusiastic member of Toorak No 2 and is currently Group Captain.
Stephen and Sue we are grateful for the special skills, energy and commitment that you bring to the Club and we wish you may happy returns.
