A very happy and healthy 2023 to everyone, and a continuing successful Rotary year to President Adrian. Let’s resolve to give him and the Board our full support as we move towards the RI Convention in May. It’s going to be an exciting time for us all, with lots of opportunity to get involved in this once-in-a-generation event.
Today we recognise Vocational Service. It sits at the very heart of Rotary, which was developed on the classification system of membership. Business and professional life are the bedrock of Rotary, and Vocational Service is a major force in promoting honour, integrity, and trust in our careers. It acknowledges the worthiness to society of all useful occupations, not just one’s own.
Way back in 1905, our founder, Paul Harris, had the vision to exchange ideas with professionals from diverse backgrounds in his city of Chicago, forming meaningful lifelong friendships and over time becoming involved in community and humanitarian service. That’s how Rotary started!
On a completely different tangent, tonight is actually Burns Nicht, the birthday of the famous Scottish poet Robbie Burns, in whose honour celebrations are traditionally held all over the world, so I hope you have your haggis in the fridge!
In the meantime, for other good food, and friendships in Rotary, we give thanks.
