Numbers in person and on-line increased last week with an interesting presentation from
Professor Graham Currie from Monash University on the compelling subject of
Melbourne’s Public Transport Future. His presentation is included in the
full recording of the meeting and can be viewed by following this link:

Key insights Graham shared highlighted Melbourne’s rapid growth as a compelling reason for substantial investment in public transport to meet the mobility needs of Melbournians. He addressed concerns about the slender business case for the new Suburban Rail Loop which will connect Melbourne’s middle suburbs by rail and stimulate CBD hubs in multiple centres improving work accessibility and local amenity for Melbourne’s expanding population.
His observations about the central role of public transport in shifting high volumes of people to and from major events was equally of interest.
Members heard solid arguments in public transport investment as future proofing Melbourne.
Check out Cheryl Lacey’s reflection which was highly relevant relevant to the speakers topic (see separate Bulletin article for the transcript). We were also privileged to have Tony Pearce, Chair of the Emergency Services Foundation and Victoria’s Inspector General for Emergency Management, update members on his 2023 on a solo trek over 50 days and 1440kms in the areas worst affected by the 2019/20 black summer fires. Sponsorship from Rotary Clubs and other communities along the way will raise money to support the work of the Emergency Services Foundation and addressing the welfare of emergency service workers (see separate Bulletin article for more info).
