Rotary with over 46,000 clubs around the world, and with the strong commitment of Rotary International’s Peacemaking Programs, plays a valuable role in contributing to world peace.
Former US President Jimmy Carter once offered a good basic definition of positive peace.
‘Peace is more than just the absence of war.
People everywhere seek an inner peace
That comes from the right to voice their views,
Choose their leaders, feed their families,
And raise healthy children.’
Peace is also critically related to social justice, as it fosters the right relationships at every level in all societies, involving individuals, groups, communities and nations collaborating together.
Rotary’s Founder Paul Harris spoke prophetically back in the 1930’s when he said ‘The way to war is a well paved highway and the way to peace is still a wilderness’.
For good food, fellowship and the opportunity to listen and serve others we give thanks.
Thank you to Peter Hollingworth for providing this reflection on 22 March 2023.
