Thinking about the remarkable achievements of our guest speaker, James Tomkins, there are arguably some parallels (OK maybe not many) between Olympians and Rotarians:
- In the Olympics, sometimes decisions are made to hold back and work with teammates, exhibiting heroic displays of goodwill and kindness; in Rotary we strive to be truthful, fair, build goodwill and build friendships
- In both the Olympics and in Rotary, it takes a lot of discipline, focus, self-sacrifice, support, feedback, mentoring, failure, resiliency, persistence and motivation to be successful
- In both the Olympics and in Rotary, how you perform matters in an individual context and also based on group or team outcomes
- In both the Olympics and Rotary, a highly diverse group of people can come together, compete or work with each other, and come away respecting their fellow human beings and admiring each other’s accomplishments.
For good food and friendships in Rotary, we give thanks.
