On the annual changeover of Presidency. What does that mean in the context of Rotary clubs?
Changeover implies ‘the passing on’ of responsibility which involves a sense of continuity with the traditional values and proven past practices. But the term can also imply by agreement a sense of change from the past, new initiatives possibly involving personal style and differing methods exercised by each incumbent in the leadership succession. Each leader comes to office with distinctive gifts and qualities based on their personal values, upbringing and professional experience.
The qualities of continuity and change always have to be present in any organisation large or small, because this paradox is what provides essential balance and a healthy environment for all those who constitute of the membership. Rotary clubs can seldom function happily with the one and not the other for both are needed.
We give thanks today for our outgoing President Adrian and the challenges he met in hosting the Rotary International Conference and a great range of activities and responsibilities and those who have supported and preceded him. Today we extend our best wishes and support to Chris our incoming president who will build upon and oversee the work of our club over the coming year.
For good food, fellowship and the opportunity to listen and serve others we give thanks.
Thank you to Peter Hollingworth for providing this reflection on 28 June 2023.
