Reflection by Robert Fisher 6 September 23

We’ve all been reading a bit in recent days about CEO salaries and bonuses. We are in the public company AGM season, when executive pay deals are published and put to a vote by shareholders. Some high profile people will no doubt again become the emblem of corporate largesse as worker and public discontent deepens.

This set me thinking – when is enough enough? It would be good to see companies exercising restraint and doing more for their communities, which are important as stakeholders – indeed just as much as their own shareholders. Most of us in Rotary are in the fortunate position of being able to share not only our time as volunteers but also whatever material resources we may have managed to accumulate.

We need to be reminded – no matter what form our generosity takes – be it an act of kindness, a gift, a donation, a helping hand – it will make someone’s day, smooth their path or just make them smile. We will have given something of ourselves that is greater than anything it would have cost.

For good food and friendships in Rotary, we give thanks.
