Last Week's Meeting 27 September 2023

The 13th Rotary Melbourne meeting of this Rotary Year, and our 5004th Meeting in the Club’s 102nd year.

Online and in-person members and guest enjoyed our return to the Clubs traditional AFL Grand Final luncheon and this year’s event was fun for all.

We were welcomed by MC for the day, Richard Dent and a thoughtfully prepared Reflection was delivered by Ross Scholes-Robertson, which is included elsewhere in this bulletin.

President Chris Sotiropoulos welcomed members and guests, including the son of a Swedish Rotarian, visiting Melbourne on a working holiday, Victor Soomus who swapped club banners.  Chris drew our attention to Stephen Lake’s 27th Anniversary as a member of the Club and congratulated him on his extensive contributions to Rotary Melbourne’s operation.  He congratulated and thanked Stephen for his service.

President Chris highlighted several important efforts and events:

Next week is Australian Rotary Health Lift the Lid on Mental Health Day and we will be creating awareness with our hats.  Bring your own or have a lend of one of our tastefully selected hats.  It will only cost you a modest voluntary donation.  Any Donations will support Australian Rotary Health.

Just a few days later and in the same week, the earlier version of our monthly evening meeting will be on Friday 6 October at the NGV where we will have the opportunity to learn about this years Winter Masterpiece Exhibition featuring Pierre Bonnard.  Organised by David Kram and the Arts Committee you can now book until this Tuesday 3rd October via Humanitix: click here.  Timing of the lecture is 5.45pm for 6:00pm, at the NGV’s Clemenger Auditorium.  If you would like to join us for fellowship and a casual dinner, call PP Reg Smith Also, please remember if you want to experience the Bonnard exhibition, you need to book your tickets directly with the NGV.

Before handing over to Chair for the day, Bernie McIntosh, President Chris reminded us that the annual raffle for a $2,000 voucher for cycling equipment has launched.  Tickets are available online from Humanitix just click here .

Bernie McIntosh then took over the meeting doing a masterful job of introducing speaker, Mark Anderson, long standing Executive Manager, Club and Sport for the MCC.  Mark’s address gave us interesting and amusing insights into the huge logistic scale of the Grand Final event, highlighting consumption of 1,500 kegs of beer, 9,200 slabs, 4-5,000 plated meals and a huge workforce of ground staff.  He contrasted the smooth operation of the Grand Final from many year’s experience at the ground, and spoke of the more challenging logistics of preparing the ground and managing the logistics of 100,000 plus audiences for rock concerts such as Taylor Swift and Ed Sheerin.  Marks address can be viewed in full on our you tube channel: click here.   If you would like to view the whole meeting which includes coverage of the Footy Trivia quiz authored by Peter Jones, click here

If you haven’t been able to join us at a club meeting in recent months, you’ll be welcomed with open arms if you come along.
