Gordon McInally recently called for Rotarians to foster The Change Within. In striving to deliver our vision - Together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves, “we must never lose track of that last call – that to bring about change in the world, we need to foster change within.”
Change within does not start until we understand the difference between our reflection in the mirror, or for some our social media profile, versus the person-in-the-person, our reputation. Knowing our person-in-the-person involves challenges. It demands clear thought and honest evaluation – of behaviour, attitudes, motivations, beliefs and desires.
A good way to move beyond the surface reflection is to focus on our actions. Actions determine the way we’ll be remembered. The sum of our life is not solely measured by status and accomplishments, but arguably and more importantly, by how well our time was spent. Do I want to be remembered for high office, important positions held, authority or power exercised, trophy possessions owned? Or, for contributions given, without expectation of advancement or kudos?
Rotary challenges us to find our own best way to contribute, to make a meaningful difference, to leave things better than we found them. Rotary has the power to make us proud of our person-in-the-person.
Today we’ll discover how actions, not words, build a reputation. How Australia’s world-best scientific research, pharmaceutical production, health services and program delivery are harnessed to tackle the World Health Organisation designated “most undertreated tropical disease in the world”.
For fellowship forged in service to others, and friendships formed by good company shared over a fine meal, we give thanks.
