Rotary Melbourne have been using the Around the Bay bike event to raise funds for The Smith Family for almost 20 years. This year we are looking to diversify our activities - instead of focussing our volunteer activities solely on the bike event we are going to put together a team to work on the Melbourne Marathon which takes place on Sunday October 13th (the week after Around the Bay).
Jim Orchard and his Rotary Melbourne team will be looking to put together a 25-30 person team to run the finish line drinks station at the MCG for the Melbourne Marathon. This will give The Smith Family about the same amount of money as we got for providing route marshalls (for Around the Bay) and because we will all be working in the same location will hopefully offer a better fellowship opportunity as well as providing some flexibility for people who are not able to volunteer for the full shift (7:00 am to 2:00 pm).
We will not be severing our link with the Around the Bay event - we will have our Team Rotary riders who will be led this year by Chris Rodd. Team Rotary will be riding from Sorrento into the city as part of Around the Bay on October 6th. If you are a bike rider and want to be part of our team contact Chris or Jim Orchard.
We are also looking to recruit SAG wagon teams and volunteers for some of the Around the Bay rest areas. If you would like to help raise funds for the Smith Family and October 6th is a better date we will find you a role with Around the Bay
The aim of these changes is firstly (and most importantly) to maintain funding for The Smith Family's Learning for Life program. In addition we are hoping the changes offer a chance to refresh the volunteering request, make it more of a social event and less of a chore for a worthwhile cause and to also look to increase the Rotary branding opportunity.
More details will be rolled out in coming weeks - if anyone has any questions or comments please contact Jim Orchard 0452 639 329 or Trevor Nink 0404 084 283.
