In 2005, Simone and Ian Carson noticed the amount of good quality food being thrown out at their local market in Prahran. They decided to do something about it themselves and gathered friends and family together to collect produce in their car and deliver to local charities.
From these small beginnings Second Bite was established, and look at it today – rescuing over 25M kgs of food per year for over 1,100 charities nationwide. What an impact!
It’s now Rotary Melbourne folklore that Bob Glindemann heard about Second Bite all these years ago and sought Board approval to provide support. He was knocked back and said blow it (or words to that effect) and put together a band of volunteers who worked on rosters over many years at Prahran and Victoria Markets. We will hear more of the Second Bite story today.
In Rotary we like to describe ourselves as People of Action. Each of us has the opportunity to identify a need in the community and do something about it. Volunteering for Second Bite is easy – only a couple of hours on the occasional Sunday afternoon. Please let me know if you’re interested in joining the Prahran roster.
For good food and friendships through Rotary, we give thanks.
