On Saturday, April 26, Rotary Melbourne members and guests were treated to a rare and enriching experience—an afternoon that seamlessly blended history, music, geography, architecture, and conviviality. Hosted at Melbourne’s distinctive Immigration Museum, the event began with a warm welcome from General Manager Rohini Kappadath, who shared the story behind bringing the cutting-edge Notre-Dame de Paris: The Augmented Exhibition to Melbourne and its powerful impact on visitor engagement.
Using immersive "Histopads"—augmented reality tablets—guests embarked on a self-guided journey through the cathedral’s rich history, from its medieval beginnings to the 2019 fire and ongoing restoration. The experience, made possible by President Emmanuel Macron’s exhibition initiative, brought Notre Dame’s legacy to life in stunning detail.
In a theatrical twist, a medievally-clad actor surprised attendees, heralding not one but two stirring performances by the elite choral ensemble, the Alchemy Consort, directed by Gary Ekkel. Their four-part rendition of French compositions captured the grandeur and emotional depth of Notre Dame through music.
The event, expertly orchestrated by Rotary Melbourne Arts Committee Chair Karen Kim and a dedicated team of Monash University interns, concluded with a delightful French-inspired afternoon tea. Guests mingled with performers and fellow Rotarians, celebrating a day steeped in community, culture, and creativity.
Thank you to everyone who helped bring this significant event to life—and to those who joined us in honouring the timeless beauty of Notre Dame.
