Update from Tangly Ton President Rotaract Club of Siem Reap May 25

Hello Dr. Carol and the members of Rotary Melbourne,

I trust this email finds you well.

A happy month to share with you! I hope everything is going well with you too. I have a tough schedule for my last semester at university because I am looking for opportunities to find a good workplace after graduation. I will be moving to Phom Penh in early June (the first week), so I will send you another update after that.

I have been involved with many community activities, and I am pretty sure that this update will communicate my words to you for special highlights of the month.

My study is going well, and it’s coming to the final exam time. It’s a piece of good news that tomorrow I am going to take a final exam on Contemporary Political Theories. My CRST friends in the same class as me also felt nervous and invited me to share with them. Everyone was a bit busy, but I had brought the exam review paper from my professor and found the keynotes from his handouts. We have a Telegram group, so I wrote in Word and dropped them in the group to review. It’s a good way to get success together. On the other hand, my juniors also requested me to run a sharing class on the introduction to economics. I am now getting used to this major because I have been sharing with the juniors for 3 classes already including this one. I love to make complex problems or explanations become easier to understand. I just break them down and find real-life examples for them. The current sharing is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 pm to 7 pm. I have a strong passion for transforming low scores into high scores.

At the end of April, we also had a house-building activity which is near the town. This time, we didn’t travel by a big bus, instead, we travelled by the big tuk-tuk. This family is living in poverty, with no husband because he passed away, leaving 4 kids to live with their mother. She was very kind to us as she brought palm juice for everyone to drink. I am not into that juice, so just let others drink it. After finishing breakfast, we gathered in a circle and had a short introduction. I was the leader of the main structure team. The weather was extremely hot, but everyone worked as normal under the heat. It’s cool that we had a delicious lunch with dessert. For sure, I loved them all. At first, I didn’t go to the top of the roof, but because we didn't have enough zinc to cover the roof, everyone came down, and I climbed up to the top to finish it with a few students. For those who are afraid of heights, I recommend that we should not go. To me, it becomes the most enjoyable thing to be on the roof. Within a day from the early morning until a bit late evening, we completed a house. Everyone was excited and clapped their hands to congratulate that lady with 4 kids for receiving a comfortable house to live in.  On the way back, everyone was having fun together on the big tuk-tuks.

We received a District Grant from the Rotary Club of Sanary Bandol Ollioules in France. Isabelle and Andre, a couple and the representatives of their club, joined us to donate 30 bicycles to the poor students. The school we chose is Pong Ro Secondary School, which is around 70 kilometers from Siem Reap town. At the beginning of the event, we divided our team into 2 groups, the first team was to teach students about basic knowledge; hygiene, environment, bike maintenance, and so on. Another team was to install some bikes’ spare parts. The school directors also invited the local authority, commune chief, and students’ parents to join the event. We had an official speech with all the students and their parents. After finishing the speech, we distributed the bicycles to everyone. Before distributing the bicycles to students, we completed the students' assessments by asking for important information from the students themselves and also went to their houses to interview their parents. We also enjoyed having a big lunch together there.

I have attached the pictures for you too. Looking forward to sending you another special one soon.

Kind regards,
Tangly
