Harry Baugh - Rotary Scholar

The speaker shared a heartfelt reflection on their life-changing experience as part of the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP) — a unique academic scholarship supported by Rotary Clubs across Georgia, USA. Harry began by recalling how, when visiting different Rotary clubs in Georgia, he would introduce himself with a cheerful “G’day,” bringing a touch of Australia to the southern United States.

His first encounter with Rotary was in 2023 when Harry visited a Rotary Melbourne meeting seeking sponsorship, aiming to make a good impression with a smile and a handshake. He expressed deep gratitude for the club’s support, which made his participation in GRSP possible.

The year-long exchange provided him with extraordinary opportunities — Harry traveled widely across Georgia, visiting cities, Rotary clubs, and natural landmarks such as mountains, beaches, and swamps. Beyond sightseeing, Harry engaged in community service, contributing to projects like park cleanups, tree planting, disaster relief food packing, and even installing a peace pole.

The GRSP program brought together 40 students from 22 countries, including Brazil, Germany, South Africa, and Vietnam. Out of hundreds of applicants, only a select few were chosen, with the speaker attracting interest from 12 clubs but ultimately sponsored by five. Harry frequently attended local Rotary meetings — sometimes up to three a week — and became well-known for his hearty appetite, with club caterers often preparing extra helpings in advance.

A highlight of his experience was the deep connections formed with fellow students and host families. Harry fondly remembered bonding over cultural exchanges and shared experiences, including enduring Hurricane Helene, which caused widespread damage and power outages in Georgia. In response, he joined relief efforts, helping prepare meals for children affected by the disaster, which became one of his most fulfilling experiences.

Throughout the year, he embraced Rotary values, regularly reciting the Four-Way Test and participating in club activities. Harry also gave talks about Australia, often amusing audiences with stories about kangaroos, giant spiders, and the famed Bunnings sausage sizzle.

Harry now see himself as an ambassador for the GRSP, keen to spread awareness of the program among Australian youth. He encouraged club members to consider nominating young people aged 18–24 for this incredible opportunity — a chance for cultural exchange, academic enrichment, and lifelong friendships.

Closing with gratitude, Harry expressed hope to return and share more of his journey in the future, underscoring the profound personal impact the program had on him and his desire to see more Australians benefit from the same experience.
