Rotary Melbourne Members Support Polio Eradication Efforts

Last week, Rotary Melbourne member and polio survivor Prof. Bruce Livett and Past President Robert Fisher attended the District 9800 Polio Plus Society Afternoon Tea at Camberwell Uniting Church Hall. The event was a strong reminder that the eradication of polio remains Rotary International’s number one campaign.

Guests were shown a powerful video highlighting the extraordinary efforts involved in delivering polio vaccinations in remote areas of Pakistan – one of only two countries where polio remains endemic.

The program featured presentations from District Foundation Chair Julie Mason and Past District Governor Dr Murray Verso, an End Polio champion. Dr Verso gave a detailed global update, noting the encouraging decline in polio cases, but also stressing the importance of continued vigilance. Without sustained effort, there is a real risk of reversal – a concern underscored by the recent report of a clinical case in Papua New Guinea.

Another challenge highlighted was the significant funding gap this year, following the United States’ decision to withdraw from the World Health Organisation and related agencies.

The event concluded with the induction of the Society’s newest member, Liz from Rotary Bendigo, who was presented with her certificate by District Governor Peter Shepheard and District Coordinator Jane Pennington.

Looking ahead, members are invited to participate in the annual Paws for Polio Walk, a fun fundraiser where participants can walk with or without their dogs. The event will be held at 10am on Saturday, 5 October at Elsternwick Park, Brighton. Bookings can be made by clicking on the button below.
