Reflection by Cheryl Lacey 3 September 25

What is - the philosophy - of Rotary? And why does it matter?

Most people answer, "Service Above Self" - putting others before ourselves.

Paul Harris’s vision was richer, deeper and more enduring.

He founded Rotary on a revolutionary idea: that people could flourish through education, enterprise, and virtue - gathering in clubs of capable, enterprising people, pursuing rational self-interest through voluntary exchange.

Look around this room.

Now imagine - every Rotary club, in every nation, doing the very same - each a gathering of capable people with years of learning and achievement.

When we share that knowledge, we multiply its value – investing in a world of capable achievers - where families and communities can truly thrive.

A hand up, not a handout.

This month - September - is Education Month.

And for Rotary to flourish, its members must first flourish.

And that begins with education.

This month we must put our own club and our members first.

We must know, understand, and agree on Rotary's objective founding philosophy.

Achieving this - could invite every club around the world - to join us in agreement.

Only then, can Rotary remain true to its founding philosophy: education and its rational application as the engine of human flourishing.

For the food, the fellowship and the knowledge we share, we give thanks.
