Carbon Neutral 2025

Next >

The Rotary Club of Melbourne has once again measured and offset its carbon footprint, reaffirming our commitment to sustainability and community development.

Emissions Overview

  • Total carbon emissions for the year to 30 June 2024 were 11.979 tonnes CO₂e, a reduction from 13.937 tonnes CO₂e in the previous year (refer Summary spreadsheet).

  • Emissions were calculated using the ESRAG Excel Carbon Calculator.

Key Drivers of Reduction

The decrease in emissions was primarily due to:

  • Lower attendance at events, and

  • Minimal in-person involvement in evening meetings.

At our regular weekly meetings on the 35th Floor, average attendance was 45 members, down from 49 the previous year. Emissions per attendee per meeting remained steady at 5.23 kg CO₂e, consistent with last year’s figure.

Carbon Neutral Commitment

To fully offset these emissions, the Club has purchased 12 certified Carbon Social credits from the WithOneSeed community forestry program in Baguia, Timor-Leste.

Each Carbon Social credit:

  • Represents one tonne of CO₂e sequestered,

  • Is a Voluntary Emission Reduction (VER) credit certified under the Gold Standard, and

  • Contributes to healthier communities by supporting sustainable environments, ending poverty and hunger, improving access to education and training, and strengthening regional partnerships.

Certification

On 3 September 2025, Rotary Melbourne received its Carbon Social Certificate confirming the assignment of 12 VERs, equivalent to 12 tonnes of CO₂e,

This certification ensures our Club continues to operate on a carbon-neutral basis, while directly supporting the WithOneSeed community in Timor-Leste.
