PNG Snakebite Community Awareness Activities - May-September 25

Upulima Marketplace, Western Province 01.07.25

Between June and September, community awareness activities were conducted across 11 locations in Central, Western, Milne Bay, Madang, and Rigo Districts. A total of 970 people (504 male, 466 female) were reached through schools, community groups, markets, health facilities, and villages.

  • Schools: 3 schools were visited (Bereina Primary, Mabudawan Grade 6, Nube Primary), reaching 418 students, teachers, and parents.
  • Communities & Villages: Sessions were delivered in 8 community settings (markets, villages, hospital, nursing school), engaging 552 people including vendors, parents, guardians, community leaders, and church staff.

Funding Support & Items Procured with Rotary Assistance
Rotary’s support enabled us to extend the reach and effectiveness of these sessions. Funds were used to purchase and develop key resources for education, demonstration, and engagement:

  • 334 snakebite bandages – distributed and used during demonstrations to teach correct first aid for snakebites.
  • 4 flip charts – created to support consistent health messaging in communities.
  • Portable eskies (lightweight and reliable) – purchased to safely transport snakebite antivenom and other medical supplies during outreach.
  • Snakes-and-ladders educational games – developed as a fun and interactive tool to engage children in learning about snakebite prevention and first aid.

Impact
The program ensured that critical knowledge on snakebite prevention, recognition, and first aid reached nearly 1,000 people across five provinces. Resources purchased through Rotary funding not only improved the delivery of health messages but also helped create memorable, practical learning experiences for both adults and children.
