Rotary Melbourne & The Melbourne Arboretum: Laying Foundations for the Future

Rotary Melbourne has forged a productive and promising relationship with The Melbourne Arboretum (TMA), a major new environmental initiative taking shape in Melbourne’s north.

TMA is being developed as a large-scale, living landscape dedicated to native Australian trees, biodiversity restoration and climate resilience. Located on a 62-hectare site at Mernda, the project brings together applied science, Indigenous ecological knowledge, community engagement and long-term stewardship of Country.

Importantly, TMA has now reached a significant milestone, with its Planning Permit expected to be issued shortly by the City of Whittlesea — marking the transition from vision to delivery.

Rotary Melbourne has the opportunity to play a foundation role in this landmark project: supporting early-stage establishment, shaping community access and engagement, and contributing to a legacy that will benefit future generations. The partnership aligns strongly with Rotary’s commitment to environmental sustainability, community service and evidence-based action.

As the project moves into its establishment phase, Rotary members with an interest in environment, education, youth or community engagement are warmly encouraged to make contact. Expressions of interest or enquiries can be directed to PP Reg Smith or Garry Fowler, Chair of Rotary Melbourne’s Environment & Sustainability Committee.

Youth engagement is already a strong and growing element of TMA’s work. The Arboretum is collaborating with St Monica’s College, winners of the 2025 Rotary Melbourne Environment & Sustainability Award, providing students with hands-on exposure to ecological restoration, climate science and stewardship of Country.

Looking ahead, TMA also plans to establish a Friends of The Melbourne Arboretum community — a welcoming, inclusive network for individuals and organisations who wish to stay connected, learn, volunteer and contribute over time. Involvement from Rotary Melbourne members, and from other Rotary clubs, will be strongly encouraged as this community of interest takes shape.

Further updates will be shared as this collaboration develops and opportunities for Rotary engagement expand.
