Rotary Melbourne member John Peberdy and Vanessa Hall visited (in early February 26) the Rotary Club of Waikīkī is one of three in Honolulu. Whilst there is relationship at an individual level, they were very impressed when I told them 22 clubs were members of RIMERN. Their slogan is “the friendly club” and that was our experience. We were introduced to many members including the President and President-elect.
There were around 40 people present at this meeting. The members responsible for various activities were given the opportunity to speak. There was huge diversity in the group which is representative of Hawaii. Gender, race and disability were all represented.
The club has a long term involvement in RYLA and had recently had a weekend with a group of RYLA young people.
They are also strong on events. Next week will be a joint celebration of Valentines Day and Chinese New Year.
They are well advanced in their preparation of an extravaganza. This is a big club event.
There is a strong focus on fundraising for the Rotary Foundation.
The program for the day was not dissimilar to a RCM meeting. It commenced with the Oath of Allegiance, followed by a short reflection. There was a new member induction (moving from Rotary Club of Honolulu).
The guest speaker was a Rotarian from Germany who visits Hawaii regularly. The meeting concluded with everyone saying the Four Way Test.
This club lived up to its slogan, the friendly club. Good people representing the strength of Rotary fellowship.
John Peberdy
