Reflection by Robert Fisher 4 February 26

Vocational Service is a cornerstone of Rotary, and has been since the organisation was founded in 1905.

It emphasises the importance of using one’s profession to serve society, and it encourages us to apply the ideal of service in our personal, business and community lives.

The objectives of Rotary, including

  • fostering high ethical standards in business and the professions
  • recognising the worthiness of all useful occupations, and
  • dignifying each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society

are all rooted in Vocational Service. By actively engaging in it, Rotarians contribute to the community and uphold the principal of service above self, which is of course central to Rotary’s mission.

If we are in employment, we can use our skills and experience to serve the community; if we are no longer employed, we can for example use our professional experience to help people achieve their career aspirations.

We look forward to today’s panel discussion around Vocational Service.

For good food and friendships through Rotary, we give thanks,

Thank you Robert Fisher.
