A Tribute to my Uncle John and the Spirit of Rotary

I wanted to share something that our family has recently been interviewed by the ABC on a reflection on dedication, community and the legacy of service that people like my Uncle John live every day.

Many of you may have seen the recent story about Italian migrants who brought ‘fancy cheese’ to Australia— a beautiful reminder of how courage, hard work and tradition have shaped who we are. It tells the tale of my uncle John Interlandi, a son of Italian migrants who, even at 90 years young, continues to craft cheese with pride, joy and passion alongside his grandson. From clearing land and hand-milking cows to building a business that introduced new flavours to this country, his journey mirrors what so many migrants have given Australia: dedication, resilience and a love of community that lasts generations.

Like the Interlandi family, my Uncle John has never stopped giving. Whether it’s through his work with Rotary, his countless hours supporting local causes, or the way he shows up for everyone he meets, his life is a testament to what it means to put others first.

He doesn’t do it for recognition he does it because he believes in lifting people up. He believed it before it was popular; he believed it when it meant long hours and unseen effort; and he believes it now, every single day.

That’s what Rotary is all about. It’s about:

  • Service above self

  • Building bridges across generations

  • Supporting families, communities and causes that need strength and compassion

  • Leaving something better for those who come after us

My uncle shows us that age isn’t a reason to slow down, that kindness is always relevant, and that legacy isn’t something you announce it’s something you live.

So today, I want to thank him  and all of you in this Rotary family for reminding us what service really looks like.
