When the headlines speak of skyrocketing inflation, interest rate hikes and the cost-of-living crisis, some of us are struck by a profound, sometimes uncomfortable, sense of gratitude. Should we be so fortunate, the current economic landscape can be a topic for analysis rather than a source of personal dread. Indeed, if that’s the case, it is a privilege to not have to choose between necessities; to not feel the crushing pressure of a household budget that refuses to balance.
In these circumstances, we should remind ourselves to cultivate empathy, appreciating that the struggles of others are often systemic rather than personal failings. As Rotarians, we also need to recognise our responsibility to support, to give, and to be witnesses to the resilience of those facing truly difficult times. Let us remain grounded in that empathy, and the desire to serve above self, even while enjoying the blessing of relative stability.
For good food, friendships through Rotary, and the opportunity to serve, we give thanks.
Thank you to Robert Fisher.
