This month’s Rotary theme, Basic Education and Literacy, reminds us of one of the most powerful foundations we can give a person.
Literacy is much more than the ability to read and write. It gives people the confidence to participate, the capacity to make choices, and the opportunity to shape their own future.
At Rotary Melbourne, our commitment to basic education takes several forms, and it is particularly fitting today, as we begin another year of fundraising for The Smith Family. Each year, our efforts raise around $20,000, helping young Australians experiencing disadvantage to participate more fully in their education.
But opportunity also depends on encouragement and guidance. Through our mentoring support for young men with Afri-AUS Care, we help create pathways through education and personal development towards a more promising future.
And through our annual Young Achievers’ Award, we celebrate what can happen when opportunity and encouragement are matched by personal determination.
Together, these activities remind us that education does not simply change what a person knows. It can change what they believe is possible.
By supporting education and literacy, Rotary helps turn possibility into opportunity — and opportunity into lives transformed.
