The Smith Family - Learning for Life

The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program supports disadvantaged young Australians, helping them stay engaged in education and reach their full potential. Many children facing poverty lack essential resources, causing them to fall behind in school. The program provides crucial financial assistance for school essentials, guidance from dedicated coordinators, and access to programs like Learning Clubs and iTrack, which boost academic performance and personal development.

Rotary Melbourne has supported Learning for Life and our annual contribution of more than $20,000 plays a significant role in the success of its success. Our support helps provide students with essential items like uniforms, books, and school supplies, removing financial barriers that can hinder a child’s ability to learn and participate fully in their education. By funding these needs, Rotary Melbourne ensures that more children have the opportunity to stay engaged in school, improving their chances of completing Year 12.

This completion is vital, as finishing high school leads to better employment opportunities, higher incomes, and improved social and health outcomes. The program's impact is evident—84% of Learning for Life students in Year 12 were employed or in further study within 18 months of graduating. Rotary Melbourne’s contribution helps empower these young people to break the cycle of disadvantage and build brighter futures.

How do we raise the funds?

Melbourne Marathon

Rotary Melbourne volunteers manage a drink station at the Melbourne Marathon, providing water and refreshments to runners as they approach the MCG. Volunteers set up the station, fill cups, and offer drinks to passing participants, ensuring hydration and encouragement along the route. This involves teamwork, coordination, and maintaining a positive atmosphere for the runners. It's a great opportunity for social interaction, with Rotarians and non-Rotarians alike coming together to support the event. Volunteers typically work in shifts and help clean up after the race, making it a fun and rewarding community service experience.

The Marathon funds the volunteers, with all proceeds going to our support of the Learning for Life program of The Smith Family.

Around the Bay

Why do we become involved in a bike ride?

Quite simply, the ride is a mechanism by which we can support children from disadvantaged circumstances to complete their school and tertiary studies.

The Rotary Melbourne participation has included:

  1. Members, family and friends sign up to ride on one of the set distances around Port Phillip Bay as part of Team Rotary.
  2. Individual and corporate members, family, other Rotary Clubs and partners sign up as route marshals and the Club is provided fee money for each volunteer by the event organiser.
  3. Sponsorships are gained for each Team Rotary rider and the Club matches much of these contributions.
  4. Our Around the Bay Raffle and Silent Auction raises additional funds.

The fun, fellowship and fitness of the Team Rotary riders is clear for all to see. Around 40 volunteers work together in teams of two and get to know each other well over the few hours together. Those who don't ride or volunteer can (and do) participate in the sponsorship opportunity.

Annually, Rotary Melbourne has raised in excess of $20,000 for the Learning for Life program and is supported by the expertise and professionalism of our corporate members in conjunction with our strategic partners and other community organisations.
