Speaker: Michael Headberry , Chairman, Salute Monash Council
Topic: Somme Impressions – June 2016 and what it means today
Michael Headberry is a foundation student of Monash University and currently heads up the Alumni Group – The Monash Pioneers – comprising students who attended Monash during the first five years 1961 to 1965.
From an early age Michael developed an interest in the study of ‘Great people of History’ leading to Michael’s abiding interest in the Life and Legacy of John Monash. Professionally from 1990 he was Senior Consultant and Co-Founder of the Australian Centre for Retail Studies within the Business School and later Managing Director of Retail Synergy Group Pty Ltd.
In 2016 he travelled to France’s Somme region to present a gift of books from Monash University to the Musee Franco-Australien and L’École Victoria at Villers – Bretonneux. L’École Victoria has a particularly strong link to Victoria as it was rebuilt in 1923 with funds raised by children within the Victorian state school system.
Among the books presented to Musee Franco-Australien was one written by the Hon. Tim Fischer, AC who was pleased to be included as he is well known in the area and attended the dawn Service held there in May 2016. The following month Michael visited many of the Western Front battlefields where the Diggers and Sir John Monash made their mark.
It is this experience that will be the subject of Michael’s address to be made on the 26th April entitled “Somme Impressions – June 2016 and what it means today.”
