The 2017 Monash Medal was awarded to Prof Geoffrey Blainey AC, an outstanding Australianwho has made an outstanding contribution to the Australian community and beyond. Geoffrey spoke with wonderful clarity about General Sir John Monash’s life and military achievements in WW1. Geoffrey spoke for 30 minutes with great insight about the history of General Sir John Monash and his importance in Australian history. Geoffrey was a very worthy Award winner . We were treated to a wonderful history lesson from a very special Australian historian.

Di Gillies, Rotarian Coordinator, Interplast Australia & New Zealand would like to thank our Club members for the Club's support of the important Interplast program to Baguio in the Philippines. Our involvement was to fund the travel accomodation, and meal costs of the volunteer nurse at the program in the Philippines amounting to around $6300.

The Legislative Assembly, Parliament House, was the special venue for the annual commemorative service to celebrate General Sir John Monash. The great Scholar, Engineer, Soldier and Nation Builder, was the second President of the Rotary Club of Melbourne. We were well represented by Stephen Lake, Austen Burleigh standing beside the Master of Ceremonies, Major General Jim Barry as. It was a wonderful celebration of Sir John Monash which I was privileged to attend representing the Club. It will certainly be included in my diary next year. Members of the Club’s “GO-PIES” Team Group Chris Wang, Kevin Sheehan, Austen Burleigh, together with Jim Mavros hosted 13 young men and women, mainly Sudanese, to the classic AFL draw between the Adelaide Crows and the Go-Pies at the MCG in Round 19 on Sunday July 30, 2017.

On Wednesday we will also see the 2017 launch of our annual riding/volunteering/fundraising Around the Bay bike ride event. This will raise funds for the Smith Family ‘Learning for Life’ program which successfully enables children from underprivileged families to reach their educational potential and contribute fully to the community.
We will also hear a compelling story from a past recipient of the ‘Learning for Life’ program.

Toorak Group 1 members enjoyed a thought-provoking evening at their August get-together at the home of Di Gillies and Rob Nethercote. Mike Rolls an Interplast Ambassador was invited to address them. Mike suffered Meningococcal Septicaemia as an 18 year old, nearly died, lost two fingers and became a double amputee.
Smiles and a wonderful ‘bonhomie’ radiated from John when chatting with both Frances and John about his history as a member of Rotary International. John was inducted into RCM in 1982 when PP Peter Parkin invited him to join Melbourne. John was a giant in the Australian mining industry. Read More...
