Attending the Rotary International Convention in Calgary was an energising and unforgettable experience. With over 16,000 people from around the world, it was a true celebration of Rotary’s global impact - and the possibilities we can unlock together.
Calgary held special meaning for me. After two years serving on the International Convention Committee, it was a privilege to help guide the event’s strategic direction - ensuring it resonated globally while remaining grounded in local spirit.
I also had the honour of chairing our international promotions team - 40 brilliant Rotarians and Rotaractors from across the globe. Over 18 months, their creativity, collaboration, and commitment helped drive engagement, boost registrations, and build a sense of shared ownership. I’m grateful not only for the impact we achieved, but for the friendships and inspiration I’ve gained along the way.
One of the convention highlights was co-facilitating a 'sold-out' breakout session with the uber-talented Taylor Huie and Lynn Slawsky on membership insights. You know those surveys we all fill out and assume disappear into the void? Turns out, they matter. We shared key findings, practical ideas, and heard stories from clubs across the world - how they’ve boosted engagement, improved retention, and reimagined the member experience. Over 160 insights were captured in the convention events app, making it a data-rich, practical, and energising session.
I've returned home reminded of the power of global connection. Every cultural exchange becomes a lesson in humanity - broadening perspectives, bridging differences, and sparking more thoughtful leadership.
The unbridled spirit of Calgary will continue to shape the way I serve, lead, and contribute - locally and globally.

I also caught up with Peter Verbeeck a member of the tennis fellowship, friend to many in the club from his time at the Melbourne Convention. Also probably the only person who has ever turned up to our club meeting wearing white tennis shorts, remember! Here he is with pants on!!
