Inspiring people and inspiring projects. The Club has always had a vibrant make up of business people and leaders in their field. Very much about can – do and supporting Melburnians who need help. Although times have changed significantly during my membership. The business world has changed with many more professional company members compared to senior corporate managers. In addition, the number of female members has grown from 1% to 22% giving different dynamics to the Club. New members like the inspirational young lady ,Stephanie Woollard, who established Seven Women at the age of 22 to empower marginalised women in Nepal demonstrates that with vision, compassion and being energised, you can deliver change.

In my 25+ years with the Rotary Club of Melbourne I can say proudly that RCM has been an anchor for the Melbourne community projects. Projects such as Life Line, an organisation with access to 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services; significant contributions to Very Special Kids (VSK) which cares for children with life-threatening conditions by providing a children’s hospice and professional family support services. PP David Jones and PP Roger Nicolson were wonderful promotors of VSK during my early years in the Club. Members have vision and can-do approach by accessing the best Melbourne networks to deliver these wonderful projects. Current projects such as Safe Families designed to improve awareness and bring an end to family violence demonstrates how the Club responds to the current community needs. What timing with COVID causing stress on people and families.

The Club has a tradition of excellent speakers again an opportunity to hear leaders share their experiences. My favourites are the Angus Mitchell Oration and the Thomas Baker Oration with speakers such as Prof Fiona Wood, Dr Alan Finkel, Dr Tilman Ruff and John Bertrand. All Australian pioneers and leaders.

So many positives and wonderful members who generously give their time and energy to make a difference for the community.
